Community What's Happening Council out in the Community

In July, Council kicked off its free Chat with Council BBQ initiative to provide an opportunity for community members across the Shire to meet with Council regarding community safety concerns.

Director of Planning and Community Development Angus Witherby said, “Earlier this year, we had a great response to a BBQ afternoon in relation to community concerns raised regarding rock throwing on the Moree Bypass. “Our discussions with community members on this occasion highlighted how affected community members were best placed to provide suggestions to Roads and Maritime Services, the police and Council in relation to this.

The next planned BBQ, in Apex Park saw a number of local business people find out about the Mobile Neighbourhood watch and how it can help monitor industrial and commercial areas.

Mr Witherby reflected, “Community safety is a Shire-wide concern so we decided to extend the program to other parts of the Shire. Unsurprisingly, we are finding that locals really understand the issues facing their patch and also have some innovative suggestions to address the concerns.”

Council’s first Chat with Council BBQ was held in Moree in July, with Ashley residents invited to come along and have a chat with Council about crime prevention this week.

Date: Wednesday 2 August 2017
Time: 3pm to 5pm
Place: Midkin Park, Ashley

Further Chat with Council BBQs are scheduled around the Shire as follows:

Wednesday 6 September – Moree, Kirkby Park
Wednesday 4 October – Mungindi, WH Smith Park
Wednesday 1 November – Moree, Jacaranda Park
Wednesday 6 December – Pallamallawa, Rigby Park

All Chat with Council BBQs will be held from 3pm to 5pm at the designated location. Mr Witherby said, “Families often have commitments in the evening – our BBQ initiative is aimed at encouraging community members who might be otherwise committed in the evenings to come along and have a chat.”
