Flags to fly in the Council Chamber

Flags to fly in the Council ChamberIn recognition of the 2022 National Reconciliation Week ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ there will be a ceremony for the placement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags in the Council Chamber, at 3pm Thursday 2 June 2022.

Open to all members of the public to come along and join the ceremony at the Balo Street entrance to the Max Centre for a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and Ochre, where Councillor Mekayla Cochrane will lead the procession into the Council Chamber to install the flags.

“As the first Gomeroi woman to be elected to Council, I am proud to be placing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, to be flown permanently, in the Council Chamber as a symbolism to our First Nation's community and respectfully acknowledge them as important decisions are being made" commented Cr Cochrane.

Mayor Mark Johnson stated that “The instalment of these two flags will further signify unity and identity, an important loop in closing the gap for our community”.

The event will conclude by 4pm when the Ordinary Council Meeting will commence.
