Mungindi Potable Water Supply – Boil Water Alert and Drop Down to Level 2 Restrictions

(Wednesday 29 January)

With the potable water supply in Mungindi sourced from the Barwon River, current conditions are causing problems with water treatment making drinking water in the Mungindi Potable Water Supply unsafe for drinking.

Level 2 Restrictions are now in place - which allows sprinklers to be used on alternate days from 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm on an odds and evens system, based on your street number.

  • Car washing with trigger hose and/or bucket only.
  • Paved and concrete surface must not be washed down while water restrictions are in place.
  • Residents are encouraged to wash full loads of clothes – to save water
  • Households with even street numbers to use sprinklers for restricted hours on even dates.
  • Households with odd street numbers to use sprinklers for restricted hours on odd dates.
  • Handheld hoses may be used on gardens at any time.

Urgent works are currently being undertaken at the Mungindi Water Treatment Plant to rectify the treatment of the water.

Water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil to make it safe. Kettles with automatic shut off switches can do this. Water should then be allowed to cool and stored in a clean container with a lid and refrigerated.

Bottled water or cool boiled water should be used for drinking, washing uncooked food (e.g. salad vegetables and fruit), making ice, cleaning teeth, gargling and pet’s drinking water.

Dishes should be washed in hot soapy water or in a dishwasher.

Boiled Water Alert - Continuation of Level 5 Water Restrictions for Mungindi

(Tuesday 28 January 2025)

Due to ongoing issues with the local water supply, the Mungindi community is advised that the Level 5 water restrictions are to remain in place until further notice. This extension is a direct result of continuing water quality concerns, which have led to the need for a Boil Water Alert.

Despite efforts to resolve the situation, the high demand for water has made it impossible for Council to flush the mains, which would normally improve water quality. As a result, the community must continue to adhere to the Level 5 water restrictions and take precautions to ensure the safety of their drinking water.

All water intended for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil. Kettles with automatic shut-off functions are suitable for this purpose. After boiling, allow water to cool before storing it in a clean container with a lid, and refrigerate if necessary.

Bottled water or cooled boiled water should be used for:

Drinking
Washing uncooked food (e.g., salads, fruits, vegetables)
Making ice
Brushing teeth
Gargling
Pet drinking water
Dishwashing: Dishes should be washed in hot, soapy water or, where available, in a dishwasher.

The community is urged to conserve water wherever possible in order to help alleviate the pressure on the water system and facilitate quicker resolution of the issue.

If the Boil Water Alert and Level 5 restrictions are still in effect when school returns, Council will make bottled water available for students.

Newly appointed interim General Manager, Natalia Cowley acknowledges the inconvenience this ongoing water issue is causing the Mungindi community and we are working around the clock to resolve it. “In the meantime, we appreciate the cooperation and understanding of residents as we continue to manage the water supply in a safe and responsible manner. We ask everyone to be vigilant about water use and to follow the guidelines for safe water consumption."

For further updates and information, please monitor local council announcements.

Level Five Water Restrictions for Mungindi with effect Monday 27 January for 34 hours

(Monday 27 January 2025)

Due to a pump failure at Council’s Water Treatment Plant in Mungindi, Council wishes to advise residents of Mungindi that Level 5 Water Restrictions need to be implemented effectively Monday 27 January until 5pm Tuesday 28 January 2025.

All residents and commercial users are requested to only use ESSENTIAL water.

Level 5 Restrictions

  • External Watering - banned
  • Washing of vehicles - banned
  • Washing down of paved surfaces - banned
  • Swimming pool filling - banned
  • Showers to be kept to less than 5 minutes
  • Only ESSENTIAL internal water

These Water Restrictions will apply until 5pm, Tuesday 28 January 2025, pending Council being able to fix the problem today, Monday 27 January.

Acting General Manager Darryl Fitzgerald explained “that a pump failure caused dirty water to enter the clear water tank and therefore no water can be supplied to the reservoirs until this tank has been emptied, cleaned and refilled. The water in the Mungindi reservoirs needs to be preserved for essential indoor use and emergency fire-fighting purposes”.

Mr Fitzgerald also confirmed that irrigation by alternate water sources will not be affected by these restrictions.

If residents of Mungindi have any questions about these restrictions, they are encouraged to contact Council’s 24-hour hotline (02) 6757 3222.
